How the Dutch Healthcare System Works<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

In the Netherlands, your General Practitioner (GP) is your first point of contact for almost all medical concerns. Unlike in many other countries, you cannot usually make an appointment with a hospital specialist without a referral from your GP.

<\/p>

Your GP is responsible for coordinating your healthcare and will:<\/p>

  • Diagnose and treat common medical conditions.<\/li>
  • Keep your medical records up to date.<\/li>
  • Discuss test results with you.<\/li>
  • Receive reports from hospitals and specialists.<\/li>
  • Refer you to specialist care when necessary.<\/li>
  • Support you in the management of chronic conditions and preventive healthcare.

    By coordinating your care, your GP helps ensure that you receive the right treatment at the right time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Everyone living or working in the Netherlands is required to have Dutch basic health insurance.<\/p>

    If you are insured under the Dutch healthcare system:

    <\/p>

    • GP consultations are fully covered.<\/li>
    • Visits to your GP do not count towards your mandatory deductible (eigen risico).

      Registering with Our Practice<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      If you live in Veldhoven or the surrounding area, we recommend registering with a GP practice as soon as possible. Being registered ensures that you have quick access to medical care whenever you need it.

      To register with Cityhuisarts Homa, you will generally need:<\/p>

      • A valid passport or identification document<\/li>
      • Your BSN (Citizen Service Number)<\/li>
      • Proof of Dutch health insurance

        When you call our practice:<\/p>

        • Press 1 if you have an urgent medical problem during office hours.<\/li>
        • Press 9 for the English menu.

          Our practice assistants are specially trained to assess the urgency of your symptoms. They may ask you several questions to ensure you receive the most appropriate care as quickly as possible.<\/p>

          Depending on your medical needs, we may offer:<\/p>

          • A consultation with the GP<\/li>
          • A telephone consultation<\/li>
          • Advice from the practice assistant<\/li>
          • An appointment with the practice nurse<\/li>
          • A home visit if you are medically unable to visit the practice

            <\/li><\/ul>

            You can also use our online patient portal to request repeat prescriptions, send an e-consult, and access information about our practice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

            Urgent Medical Care\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

            During Office Hours<\/strong><\/p>

            If you have an urgent medical problem during our opening hours, please contact our practice immediately. We will assess your situation and arrange appropriate care.<\/p>

            \u00a0<\/p>

            Outside Office Hours<\/strong><\/p>

            If you need urgent medical care during the evening, at night, during weekends or on public holidays, please contact the SHOKO Huisartsenpost (GP Emergency Service).<\/p>

            \u00a0<\/p>

            The GP Emergency Service is located at the M\u00e1xima Medical Centre (MMC) in Veldhoven and provides urgent care for medical problems that cannot safely wait until the next working day.<\/p>

            Always call before visiting the GP Emergency Service.<\/p>

            \u00a0<\/p>

            A trained triage nurse will assess your symptoms and determine the most appropriate care. Depending on your situation, they may:<\/p>

            • Provide medical advice by telephone.<\/li>
            • Schedule an appointment at the GP Emergency Service.<\/li>
            • Arrange a home visit by a GP if necessary.<\/li>
            • Refer you directly to the hospital Emergency Department if required.

              <\/li><\/ul>

              After your visit, a medical report will automatically be sent to your own GP so that your medical record remains complete and your follow-up care can continue smoothly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

              Call 112 in a Life-Threatening Emergency<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

              Call 112 immediately if you or someone else experiences a life-threatening emergency, such as:<\/p>

              • Severe chest pain<\/li>
              • Difficulty breathing<\/li>
              • Loss of consciousness<\/li>
              • Symptoms of a stroke (facial drooping, speech difficulties or weakness)<\/li>
              • Serious accidents or severe injuries<\/li>
              • Heavy bleeding
